MEDIA RELEASE
 FOR IMMEDIATE USE
 7 JUNE 2001

GOVERNMENT OUTREACH TO THE MID-KAROO

THE EASTERN Cape Executive Council will next week (from June 11 to 15) embark on an outreach programme in the Mid-Karoo Areas that comprise
among others Graaff Reinet, Aberdeen, Willowmore, Steytlerville, Cradock and Middelburg.

The Provincial Government initiated the outreach programme in 1998 to enable the Premier and the MECs to interact directly with communities
and hear peoples experiences and problems first hand. This programme also aims to fulfil the governments Constitutional obligation that
people have a right to know.

Given the Eastern Capes reality that the majority of the people are illiterate and do not have access to facilities like Radios and
Television the outreach programmes aim to cover that gap. The programme will culminate with youth day activities in Cradock.

It would be highly appreciated if your institution could send a representative to this weeklong event
